Citizens' Police Academy

In 1997, the Springfield Township Police Department began its first citizen police academy. The program consists of a 10-week program, meeting three hours a week on Monday evenings. The students are exposed to all aspects of the police department and police work. The program consists of classroom style learning with guest speakers and "hands-on" programs. In addition, the participants have the opportunity to use the police department firing range and participate in a ride-along program.

All classes are taught by law enforcement professionals and the majority of instruction will be held at the Springfield Township Police Department, 1130 Compton Road. Classroom time includes presentations and information regarding police special operations, criminal investigations, basic law, narcotics investigations, accident investigations, police ethics, K-9 and more.

In 1998, a group of graduates from previous citizens' police academies formed the first known Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association in Hamilton County. This group is designed to continue to foster the relationship made during the citizen police academy, as well as to provide support and assistance to the Springfield Township Police Department. The alumni group has been active in programs such as Halloween safety, holiday food drives and assisting the police department with some of the summer programs with kids.

The purpose of this program is to build a better understanding between citizens and the police through education and cooperation. THE CPA IS NOT DESIGNED TO AND DOES NOT MAKE THE PARTICIPANTS CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICERS.
