Fire Department Open House

Every October, the Springfield Township Fire Department kicks off National Fire Prevention week by hosting an annual Fire Prevention Open House at the Fire Department Headquarters attached to the Township Civic Center, 9150 Winton Road.

The purpose of the Open House is to educate the public about fire safety and to provide an opportunity to see fire apparatus and other emergency equipment that property tax money supports.

The event includes fire equipment demonstrations, fires and University Air Care Helicopter. There will be fire safety activities for the kids, where children can try on firefighting gear and go through the safe house which teaches children how to exit a smoke-filled house. Children and adults can also meet Sparky the fire dog and take a guided tour of the firehouse.

The Fire Department's Open House is an annual tradition that started in the 1960s by the Northern Hills Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Leininger and his staff have expanded the tradition to include live demonstrations of equipment and fire extinguishment. One of the most popular demonstrations is the Christmas Tree Fire in which a structure is built to simulate a living room. The room is furnished with furniture and a Christmas tree. When a small fire ignites the tree within seconds the room reaches temperatures of over 100 degree and ignites everything in the room. The purpose of the fire is to educate the visitors about holiday fire hazards.
