NEW INFORMATION: A Steel section of the Word Trade Center will be on display at the 2011 Fire Department Open House!

Every October, the Springfield Township Fire Department kicks off National Fire Prevention week by hosting an annual Fire Prevention Open House at the Fire Department Headquarters located at 9150 Winton Road.  The purpose of the Open House is to educate the public about fire safety and to provide an opportunity to see fire apparatus and other emergency equipment that property tax money supports.

The event includes fire and emergency equipment demonstrations, household fire extinguishing demonstrations, hands on activities for the kids, guided tours of the fire station, and interactive displays. Kids will be able to jump aboard the fire trucks and have an up close look at the rescue vehicles of today and even one from the past! Children will have an opportunity to try on firefighting gear and go through the safe house which teaches them how to exit a smoke-filled house.

The Fire Department's Open House is an annual tradition that started in the 1960s by the Northern Hills Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Leininger and his staff have expanded the tradition to include the live demonstrations. One of the most popular demonstrations is the Christmas Tree Fire in which a structure has been built to simulate a living room. The room is furnished with furniture and a Christmas tree. When a small fire ignites the tree, within seconds the room reaches temperatures of over 1000 degree and ignites everything in the room. The purpose of the fire is to educate the visitors about holiday fire hazards.
