Springfield Township is honored to celebrate the promotion of an exceptional officer, a dedicated public servant, and a leader within the Police Department: Sergeant Jim Scheeler.
Sergeant Scheeler’s journey in law enforcement is a testament to his passion, commitment, and unwavering dedication to both the Springfield Township Police Department and the community we serve. His career with this department began long before he ever put on a badge, dating back to the year 2000 when, at just 15 years old, he joined our Police Explorer program. Even then, Jim displayed the drive and determination that would later define his career, representing the department in both local and national competitions and setting a standard of excellence for those around him. On October 26, 2009, Jim’s long-held ambition became a reality when he was sworn in as a Springfield Township Police Officer. From day one, he distinguished himself with his work ethic, his willingness to learn, and his commitment to the mission of this department. It wasn’t long before those qualities led him to a specialized assignment, becoming a Police Canine Handler in March of 2015 with his trusted partner, K9 Pako.
Together, Sergeant Scheeler and K9 Pako formed a team that exemplified skill, discipline, and perseverance. Their partnership, training, and adversity were tested during an extremely dangerous and intense incident. On June 3, 2016, while engaged in the pursuit of a violent armed offender on Winton Road, K9 Pako was shot in the line of duty. That moment could have been a breaking point for this incredible team, but instead, it became a defining one. With incredible resolve, Sgt. Scheeler ensured that Pako received the best possible care, and together they returned to duty stronger than ever. Their perseverance, courage, and service were recognized with the K9 Valor Award by the North American Police Work Dog Association—an honor truly befitting their heroism.
Beyond his work as a K9 handler, Sergeant Scheeler has continually given back to this department and the community. He has mentored and trained the next generation of officers as a Field Training Officer, shaping and guiding new officers. He has served as an Explorer Advisor, giving back to the very program that first sparked his passion for law enforcement.
As Sergeant Scheeler takes on this new leadership role, we recognize not only his past achievements but also the leadership, integrity, and vision he will bring to the rank of Sergeant. This promotion is not just a reflection of his years of dedication, but also of the confidence we have in him to help lead this department into the future.
